POS/Cash register (OS) equipment

  • POS (Point of Sale) systems—or computerized cash register equipment—consist of a combination of hardware and software designed to automate retail, payment, and inventory management processes. They perform a much broader range of functions than a traditional cash register, integrating sales, warehouse accounting, customer loyalty programs, and analytics into a single system.

    Key Hardware Components

    • POS terminal (computer). Typically a touchscreen monitor with an integrated computing unit, designed to be resistant to moisture and dust.
    • Fiscal unit / Receipt printer. A device that prints purchase receipts for customers and fiscal reports for the State Tax Inspectorate (VMI).
    • Bank card reader (EFT-POS). Used for secure payments via bank cards, smartphones, or smartwatches.
    • Barcode scanner. A handheld or stationary laser device that allows for the instant identification of an item and its addition to the shopping cart.
    • Cash drawer. A metal compartment for the secure storage of cash, which opens automatically only when a cash payment is confirmed.
    • Customer display. An additional screen that allows the customer to view scanned items, prices, and the final total amount due.

Common Types of POS Equipment Based on Business Needs

    • Stationary POS systems. Powerful touchscreen computers, typically used in large grocery stores, clothing boutiques, or restaurants with high customer traffic.
    • Mobile POS systems (Smart POS). Compact, all-in-one devices (usually based on tablets or smartphones) that feature an integrated receipt printer and card reader. Ideal for couriers, outdoor retail, beauty salons, or cafes (for use by servers at tables).
    • Self-checkout (SCO) terminals. Specialized units that allow customers to scan their own items and make payments, thereby reducing queues and optimizing staff operations.
